8N Ford coils

Actually.. they are making pseudo 12v square coils.. more correctly.. they are 2.5 ohm coils.. meaning thye still need ballast inline... or with a 6v coil, the ballast resistor PLUS another resistor..

oem ballast resistor on the frontmount N was a 3 terminal block behind the dash.

G'day if you have got 12+ volts at the pos side of the coil then fit a 12v non resistor coil and if your points and condensor are good then all should be fine

Thanks for trying to help.. but please don't give advice if you don't know about this VERY specific ford system, or principles of basic electronics... it will only serve to confuse the original posters and other readers that don't have a ford and/or electronics background.

There is NO native 12v coil ( 3+ ohm ) for a front mount ford.. At best there is a 2.5 ohm coil, and it STILL needs extra serial primary resistance with it. Only way around that is to jimmy up a blank on the distribuitor top so you can run a different coil... it's easy to do for someone who knows the ford front mount distribuitor.

Also.. just because you measure 12v on a line before a distribuitor coil .. that does not mean that there are not resistors inline.. there is no voltage drop across a resistor unless there is current flowing.. current won't be flowing if the points are open.. thus you can take a battery and put 100 resistors inline and measure from one side of the battery to the other side where that long lione of resistors is, and you will still get normal battery voltage as an open circuit.. connect that resistor chain to the other side of the battery, THEN you will get voltage drop across each restive element. Just basic high school electronics here...
