I have a parts manual soundguy. I got to the valves today, but during the day my dad spoke to his mechanic at work. The man said on the two or three he did, there were two shim like pieces under the spring to keep it tight(picture 1).... My father also got a spring compressor tool, we then tightened the spring up(picture 2), which opened the valve. We then manually pushed tehe valve closed, which pushed the shims out. After that the valves came right out. I then cleaned up the seats with a wire wheel and a bench wire wheel for the valve. I also took a few pics of my workshop, nothing special, just something to share.

EDIT: The pics are out of order, but the shim is in my hand and the compressor is still in the block.

Pretty good for 15 yoa, glad you interested enought to take the Ford on for operations..

Thanks man, this is easy stuff to learn as you go, in my tech class i designed/built my teachers 4 link suspension for his jeep (pic attached)

Back to the topic: Tonight im going to finish cleaning the valves. The shims, keepers, are a pain to get back in, got some grease to hold 'em in and ill give it a go. Ill post on how that goes this weekend.

Hey everyone, somewhat new to tractors, only 15 but very mechanically inclined. Im wondering how to get out the valves on a 49 8n. I have a valve spring compression tool but its too small, its made for lawn tractors i believe. I have very low compression and have gunk around the valve seats
from it sitting for 15+ years. Freed up the cylinders with M.M.O. and used ATF for the rings after and have yet to re-install the head. What size should the tool be to get off the valve spring retainer clip? How should I clean the seats? Wire wheel, fine sandpaper? Any suggestions/input are greatly appreciated.

My Farmall Cub engine is a flathead like the 8N engine. Used a screwdriver to compress the valve spring from the bottom to get the keepers off the valve stem. Be careful and be sure to plug all the oil return holes with rags. I dropped one of the keepers from valve #1 (the valve nearest the front of the engine) down one of those holes and found that keeper in the oil pan. I also dropped a few on the floor but found them. I finally ordered a dozen spares just in case.

Getting those keepers reinstalled can be a chore if all you have is screwdrivers. I have a nifty valve spring compressor that makes this job easy. It's a K-D 700, but they're not made anymore as far as I can tell. Found a used one on eBay for $20 plus shipping.

Thanks flusher, my dad talked to his mechanic and i got the EXACT same tool from him hah. I ended up getting the keepers out, and not thinking, pulled the tool out thinking i would deal with the shims later. BAD IDEA! It took me about and hour to do two sets of keepers because it was a pain to get back under ghe spring to compress it. Anyway, the 3 i took out are done.

Yep, they're the way to go.
I tried to use one of those C-clamp type valve spring compressor tools on my Cub--awkward to use and pretty frustrating. The K-D 700 is infinitely better for flatheads.

Exaclty, the only hard part is getting the keepers back in. Even that is tolerable though. Almost impossible without that tool.

I coated the keepers lightly with grease, picked them up with a magnetized flat blade screwdriver and inserted them one at a time around the valve stem. The grease holds the keepers onto the stem while carefully backing off the squeeze on the K-D 700 spring compressor to lower the spring around the keepers. Takes a little practice.
