Hey all,

I have a 51 8N that the seal on the rear pto leaks bad, it very low on fluid so I'm gonna drain whats left and replace, my question is-

When I try to remove the bolts that have never been apart, should I try a breaker bar, 6 or 12 point socket or should I use air impact, seems everything I touch on this old tractor fights me, I am trying not to break the bolts in the casting, started spraying last night with 2 different types of penetration oil.

Any advice to help me not break off the bolts much appreciated!

Thanks

air impact, with impact sockets (generally colored black) and normally 6 point.

12 point, breaker bar and more likely to strip the heads of bolt or nut.

i just use PB blaster. but some folks on here run a special mix of stuff, that eats paint, eats rust, and loosen stuff up.

Thanks Ryan,

Looking for a few more opinions please, has any one heated up the casing prior to trying to loosen the bolts?

They don't call a torch set the Big Red Wrench for nothing. Heating to break lose bolts works.

I'll usually get the bolt/nut glowing than hit it one more time PB blaster to hope the metal expansion allowed a little better penetration than give it try. I've tried using a propane torch but never had much luck with that as compared to oxy/acetylene. MAPP gas might perform a little better than propane if all you have is just a hand torch.

I allow the bolt to lose its red glow before torquing on it. While I like how an impact hammers to break it loose I don't like how there is no "feel" to know whether the bolt is going to break or not. Usually I will use a 1/2" cheater bar that is about 24" inches.
