My 8n has a steering problem, new style steering box, when I turn the wheel the steering shaft moves up and down as much as an inch. Could this be as simple as bearings, or do I have bigger issues. I am gonna tear it down, possibly this weekend.

I had the same problem with mine wheel moved up and down when you turn and a lot of slop. The top bearing was worn out from lack of oil new bearings and it works like new. Refill with JD corn head grease it won't leak out like the 90w oil.

yep.. top thrust bearing is likely gone.

need to pull the tin, bat box, and dash. get the box top off. fish all the old rollers out. intall a new bearing. check the cup. re-assemble. adjust backlash.. pack with 0 or 00 ep grease.

make sure you pay attention to preload on thrust bearing using shim stack under box top.

Needs a new bearing. Stay away from the new fangled plastic ones
