8N still won't rev

Good thing you checked the vreg even though you were advised not to.

he was advised not to check the vreg as a CAUSE of his inability to rev.

Having a charged battery before testing is basic troubleshooting 101. that would have led him to the non op vreg issue.

Of course.. he simply could have looked at his ammeter and noticed it was always swinging left into the discharge area.. that should have been a MAJOR CLUE as to a problem forming.

you'r diagnosis and ideas on his problem were also very helpfull.. er.. oh wait. that's right.. you didn't have anything helpfull to contribute to the thread.... ;)

to be clear.. the vreg will NOT effect ignition or revving.

it handles charging the battery.

if the battery is weak, you have an electrical problem.. a charged battery vs the discharged battery would have been the test etc...

if you'd care to test this FACT, you can take a pair of wire cuters and cut all the wires off the genny and vreg.

the tractor will start and run, as long as the battery is charged.

i would have to agree i have run a many 8n,s and 6xx/8xx series tractors when repairing them with just two pieces of wires and a resistor and a hot battery.

So all in all the vreg really wasn't the problem the almost dead battery was and what caused the battery to be almost dead was the vreg

yep.. contribuiting factor to the main problem, discharged battery

In my second post I stated that I replaced the ammeter because it wasn't showing charge when I knew the bat was low. I'm not a mechanic. I don't have testing equip. Over my 59 years I've kept many old vehicles & machinery going by using my common sense and ability to read instructions and replace parts. Most times if the engine starts a discharged bat is not the problem. I only charged the bat because it didn't start & lo and behold it started and reved. Common sense kicks in. I appreciate all the help I can get and was as happy to hear from racekid as anybody else. Let's just all get along and be happy the problem was solved no matter how roundabout the road. again, thanks to all.

test equipment as cheap as a 2.99$ meter from HF is more than enough. even a test lamp will work.. and you can rig one of those up with 2 pieces of wire and a brake lamp bulb.

in the end.. the dash mounted amp meter ( center 0 ) tells all.

I get along just fine... :)
