9/11\'s pet of the day on AOL

Our resident K-9, who worked the Pentagon crime scene for ten days with his handler (my better half), made AOL's pet of the day yesterday.

Congrats to you and Stryker. He's a beautiful animal. You must be very proud and rightly so.

Did Stryker get equipped with the boots to protect his pads when searching? I remember it was a Canadian company which made those and sent cases of them to the site for the dogs so they could avoid cuts, etc., when walking through the debris.

Stryker never wore the boots because he did not need them, and could work more effectively without them. Some of the dogs would not tolerate the boots, and many even had problems with their handlers "looking" different (dressed in full Tyvek protective suits).

Prior to 9/11, Alice and Stryker had had several deployments in a section of DC called Anacostia, where the parks are mostly ground glass. So she had been working him on exercises to toughen his paws up, and it came in very handy at the Pentagon.

According to Alice, the biggest hazard for everyone there, including the dogs, was the pervasive jet fuel. Everyone went through de-tox after each one hour deployment. You might imagine what a chore it would be to get some dogs into a bath six times a day, for ten days running/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Hank, congrats to Alice & Stryker for a job well done.
6 baths a day, mine has hot & cold running water to his bath area, and once a day would be an impossibility. Accomplishing 6 baths a day is testiment to excellence in the handlers as well as the Canine-Americans.

What a wonderful dog you have that would be able to put some closure for people in such a terrible event.

Congratulations and God bless,

Tim
