I have a new to me case ih c50 that has only had regular oil. I would like to put synthetic oil but was once told that once a motor gets broken in with one type of oil, you shouldn't switch. Is there any truth in that?

Wifes tale. Just like the you cant use synthethic and then switch back to dino, casue some say the oils wont mix. What do they think the semi-syn oil is. Yes you can switch. You can also run syn-oil from mile zero, after all its factory fill in many cars like mercedes, corvette, trialblazer SS etc.

clemsonfor is RIGHT ... on every point.
I am still amassed at how many, otherwise seemingly intelligent people, still keep this non-sense fabrication making it's rounds.

Switch to synthetics and you will stop (or greatly reduce) all future wear to your equipment....
Case IH has some great tractors... My sister & BIL have a CX100, wonderful tractor, and switched to synthetic... KennyV

Sounds more like an old husband's tale to me. :D

My wife does not talk about motor oil but I do.

I think this tale originated long time ago. I would say 35 -40 years back when we used non-detergent oil and detergent oils just became available. If you put detergent oil to an engine run long time with then "standard" non-detergent oil some passages in the engine plugged by released gunk and led to engine damage. Some engine oils were not compatible and mixing them led to very quick engine failure. But you have to be old enough to remember those days.

I dont know about the detergent issues but I have heard that motors that have run extensively (broken in) on regular oil and switched to synthetic may start using oil due to seepage by the rings due to synthetics different molecular build. My dss 306 race motor from a mustang was broken in with regular 10w30 and was fine. When we switched to synthetic it started using a 1/2 a qt or more every oil change, went away when we switched back to reg 10w30... Maybe coincidence... I dunno.

Just think if you sold it, that guy unless you told him would have no idea what you used. Also think of all the modern compacts that are in the seveeral thousand hour range that have had multiple owners. My guess is that non of them have had the same brand in them for all these years let alone the same type oil.

I can see the non-detergent then detergant thing being true. But also think of it this way. Think of all those old farmalls, MF, HF, Fords etc that are 60 years old now. There is no telling what they have had in them for oil, some original , some on their first rebuild. Now granteed those motors are nothing similar to a modern deisel, way more crude but i was just making a point.

Personally I like to see some usage just to know the oil is getting to all the right places.
