911 response time

FWIW, I also thought 8 minutes was a good response time. My local sheriff’s office is a good 30 minutes away. It would all depend on where they are and what’s going on when I called.
I’m glad everything worked out as well as it did. It’s tough to say what could have happened if this man faced an unarmed and more gullible home owner.

I would have done the same. I watch true crime daily, they never run out of crazy people breaking into rural homes and killing people. Rural homes are easy targets..

In all the 38+ years out here in the boondocks, I've had folks come to my door at night. Three time, as I remember. The rancher, to the south, will knock on the door - then yell - "Rolf, it's Nelson - I'm out here on the porch. I need to talk to you". The new neighbor - just across the county road - will do the exact same, from now on. His eyes were as big a saucers when I opened the door and had my shotgun in my right hand. The house is so well insulated and it's double wall - you can not hear a car as it enters my yard and stops.

It is common practice here to use the back door on rural properties.

I was a volunteer for about 10-15 years. The members available at different times of day can be pretty lean. They mostly are folks with day jobs as training requirements have pushed out lots of retirees from actually fighting fires. More than once have i seen less than 3 firefighters at a fire that needed more hands.
They certainly need more members that are able. Not always easy to find new ones.

After having seen the response my parents have gotten (multiple times) I can also add that depending on the location they may even get lost along the way.
In fact it got to the point my parents started giving directions to their place to the dispatcher whenever they called 911 (and even when they made non-emergency calls directly to the sheriff/police departments) ..... and the officers still get lost and have to re-request directions.
All due to an over reliance on the navigation devices in the squad cars -- which have flawed map info for my parent's area (even though they live at the city limits of a city with a metropolian population of 200,000).

Amen. Indiana is also frequently listed as a stand your ground state. I would not want to push that though. Better to get away if you can - assuming you are in public and not your own home.
All in all looking back on it only thing I would have done differently is affirmatively tell the guy the cops were on the way. That way if he really was looking for help he would know it was coming. Of course he had to know from my reaction 911 had been called.

There is another alternative available in our area. I can't remember the exact name of the service. You can have the folks come to your home and identify the exact location by GPS coordinates. Then in a medical emergency you will push ONE key on your cell phone three times( might have changed by now). They will come via air ambulance. Helicopter.
At the time, about ten years ago, it was not that expensive - considering. About $175/year. Considering how much it costs to be medi-vacked by copter now - that is dirt cheap.
I just checked and I am served by AirMedCare. $65/year and it's cheaper if you choose added years. This company is now a grouping of four of five original companies. It's obviously caught hold - the price has certainly gone down.

I've had someone knocking on my door at 5:00 AM, after leaving the road and almost ending up in the river; on another occasion, about 8:30 at night driving down a deserted highway in a major snowstorm 2 miles from the nearest home in either direction; I encountered two women standing on the side of the road trying to flag me down. They had gotten lost, and gotten a Ford Escort stuck about 1/2 mile up a woods road. Should I have chased the first guy off with a gun, and left the two women to die? That would have been a very likely outcome, as there was no other traffic on the road.
I never said that it was safe; however, I did state that with the information we originally had, Mr Rupert's comments were warranted.

Yes, that's not bad at all. In my area, there is no local police so we have state police coverage from a barracks about 25 miles away via back roads. So, unless a unit just happens to be close by, we are looking at at least 20 minutes.
We do have a local fire company and EMTs about 3 miles away. The ambulance crew is always at the station so they are fast unless already on another call. The firefighters are all volunteer so they have to drive to the station first.

I am stuck on the eight minutes. That would be super fast, unbelievable fast for my area. Not knocking the ER's, it is just the way it is out here.
