Just wondering how much grease do folks put in the blade bearing fittings on a 914 mmm. I've heard you can over grease them... A friend of mine puts 6 - 7 pumps where my brother in-law does 15 - 20... anyone have the right number and I know it probably depends on the grease gun.. .

I've been greasing things for years and I always put 3 shots from a hand pump unless I'm repacking after installing new or cleaning. I've never had a bearing failure due to lack of grease. you're milage may vary. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

To me 6 - 7 pumps seems high. I usually go with about 3 max as long as you stay on the right schedule along with the manual.

Can you over grease these bearings?

I believe any bearing can be overgreased? Maybe one of the experts could chime in here.

I use a Arrow power greaser and put 2 pump cycles in before EVERY mowing.
Over greasing if it comes out on top could get on belt and cause slippage.
Just like putting too much grease in the throw-out bearings on manual transmissions could get on clutch brake or the disc.
I mainly grease every time to keep wheels lubed.
I've never heard of overgreasing hurting a bearing.

Neither have I, which doesn't mean much! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I usually grease until it comes out the little hole in the bottom of the spindle.

Overgreasing causes the grease in the housing to churn like in a blender. This causes excess heat and premature seal and bearing failure. There needs to be room for the grease to move without being in constant churning motion. Once you've greased a tapered roller or straight roller bearing you should be good for numerous times of use. Compare this to you car wheel bearings, many are NEVER greased or only when a brake job is performed. My recommendation is to grease your mower deck spindle bearings 1 to 2 times per season. Wheels can be greased much more frequently because they don't rotate at the same velocity or generally have the same sealing capability.

Even w/ my every mowing grease job the top and bottom of the mower show very little excess grease around them.
Your spindle bearings turn at 3000+rpm vs 5-600 rpm for car bearings.
We have an early '80 IH284 w/ woods belly mower, '84 Continetal Belton 5' mower and had a 7+year old woods RFM than didn't have any problem w/ our greasing plus they are in great shape yet after mowing 5 - 7 acres every mowing.
We only use Schaeffer moly grease too which won't mix w/ water like lithium base grease and gives the blender look to the grease when it gets water mixed in it.
