ok.. recap. checked vac lines, and bat cable.. all were 98%

tore throttle body down.. looked at what I believe is tps and iac.. port for iac was dirty.. almost as dirty as the throttle body.

took about an hour start to finish.. ( did I mention throttle body was dirty? )

put it al back together. ( man I hate that dodge air box design )

hit the starter.. started, coughted 2 times real fast then broke into a good idle

.. i slamme dthe hood down and decided it was a time for a test drive.. bumped her to reverse.. idled out of driveway, went to drive, turned ac on, bumpe dthe gas to get her rolling.. and idled all over the neighborhood.. came to a hilland let her idle up the hill as far as she would go without throttle.. tried with ac on and off, lamps on/ off, loading the engine with power sterering tight turns lock to lock. she never indicated she wanted to stall.. never had to touch gas pedal except to get moving faster.

just finished putting up the tools.. grand total was a 3$ can of carb spray, a shop rag, a couple paper towels and qtips.. a torx multi tool, screwdriver and wrench... plus an hour or so of time.

when she coughed at startup I got that bad feeling like I made it worse or broke something..

I do notice she now idles at 650-700 rpm, and sounds good.. before I think she was idling at 550-600.. maybee that was a sign the throttle body was getting dirty?

any way, I'll update this thread if anything changes. I plan on using hi test gas for the next few months of fillups, plus using a bottle of that 'add every fillup' style cleaner just in case.

had that been a carb.. she's have never run with it as dirty as it was...

thanks for all who commented.

I'm glad it was fixed with a cleaning but if it happens again I'd replace that Idle Air Control. IAC

Glad it was simple, I agree, there is no reason to use high dollar gas, unless you have an engine with enough compression to need it.

Nice job taking care of it yourself! Nothing more rewarding than that.

I will also echo the comments that high-test fuel is a waste of money unless your vehicle requires it. The same detergents are used in all grades of gasoline, the only difference is the flash point of the varying grades of fuel and it could actually cause more problems than good using high-test in a vehicle requiring regular or mid-grade.

Might add some 'every tank' cleaner for a couple tanke then.

( owners manual says 87 is fine ). I understand that higher octane actually raises the flash point.. etc...

thanks guys

Every other oil change I put a bottle of Z-Max fuel system cleaner in and you notice the difference in engine smoothness, fuel mileage, and spark plug condition (I check them every 20-30k miles).

strangly enough a guy Iknow with a newer dodge ram had a similar problem 2 days before mine.. though he was thinking it was water. I'm gonna have to talk to him.. mighta been a load of bad gas? locally ( he lives downt he road from me ).. that maybee dirtied up the throttle bodies real fast??? or pushed marginal ones over the edge?

I don't know, for sure - the nearest 5.9 liter engine (that I have legal access to) is about 100 miles away. If I recall correctly, there is a large plastic air duct coming from the air filter box that is clamped to the top of the engine. Take that duct off and it will expose the throttle body. The AIC will be mounted to the side of the TB, probably held on by some Torx screws. I think the thing circled in red in the picture is the AIC. (I'm not 100% certain that this picture is even from a Dodge 5.9 L engine...)

I am an owner of a 5.9L 1997 Ram, and had the same exact problem. Tried removing the plug from the map sensor first, to see if it would idle by default, and would not. Then removed the AIS as is pictured above. Would have cleaned it with combustion cleaner, but it was broken, and had to replace. I replaced it with an O.E.M. part, and it is running great
