jpm1, I like your corduroy roads! Looks good and I wish I had that type of soil where I am making mine. Unfortunately I have a couple feet of peat or as termed by some government agency, "muck". I just need to get through this area and then I can enjoy the back 20+ acres that is much higher and very nice land. I agree Hemlock is good to use for this if you have it. I'm using white cedar and then poplar as my primary two species and then I'll use elm or black ash which is abundant where the low areas are. The elm is going to die off no matter what I do so my logic is use it instead of my red maple, yellow and white birch and burr oak as those are all good firewood.

Just adding a pic of the property and I marked with a red line the trail that I am building through the bush. The whole of the red line is low lying ground and while it's dry in July-October, the peat makes for very soft ground and one good rain can easily make getting a tractor stuck high odds. In Google Earth, the red line measures just over 1400 feet:shocked:. I was hoping it was more like 500-600ft as that is one long corduroy road to build. The worst locations are the very beginning of the trail (bottom of the red line) which I have already done and the very end (top of the red line) as water really collects in these places in the Spring. I have thought of actually redirecting the water entirely as this area is low in comparison to all other areas of the my land, the neighbours (to the left) and the township land (to the right). I've been thinking perhaps a pond is a good idea and direct as much of the runoff as possible to the pond via drainage tile and/or ditches. I may post a separate topic on this to get people's opinions.
