Re: Speaking of chains

I know very little about what type of chains that work the best on R-4 type tires. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif
I run ice chains during the winter and regular chains the rest of the year...and I bet a lot of people wish they had chains on there vehicle this evening. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

I found the best way not to get a rough ride from the chains, let some air out of your tires when the ground is frozen.

The freezing rain turn to snow about an hour ago over here, over 1/2" of snow fallen and snowing even harder.

Hope you folks have some candles on hand /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif and your pups are curl up sleeping.

Have a pleasant and safe evening over there.

My thanks & congrats for you and wife rescuing the Goldens. I love their names and pictures. Hate to here of abuse like that. Can't understand how someone could do it.

I have a 10 yr. old named Buford. We call him "Bubba" , but I'm from the South and we have to call something Bubba down here. He is an absolute sweetheart. Ain't a mean bone in his body.

Buford was actually named after the guy that dug my Septic sys. here. When I got the dog he reminded me of this guy. The Septic guy came about 5 years ago to do some backhoe work for me. He saw the dog and asked his name. I told him the dog was named for him. He said "why" I replied "Well he reminded me of you big, dumb, & lazy" glad he took it well!!!

Re: Speaking of chains

Thomas -- Thanks for the warm thoughts. We are SO Y2K compliant it's pathetic. Primary heat source: wood. And don't overlook the R-value of five dogs and three cats on the bed. Spring fed water with gravity feed backup in case the power fails. Studded snow tires on both our all-wheel drive vehicles, and chains on the Kubota. Food for a month. And all the refrigeration any man could want.

Life is grand.

Not to bad. More miserable than anything. No power outage. Freezing rain was sticking to everything til about noon. Was still raining around in late afternoon. The only place the freezing rain was sticking to was the back roads. Hope to be pushing back banks later this week or begining next week. I did get some chains, tried without chains (ag tires) not good on the steep drives. Also made my off set plow set up for the bucket. No digital camera /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif, gotta wait till I develop the film (what a pain in the @ss). Take care over there.

Boondox, how bad was it yesterday down your way? I like your Y2K complance, never though about the huge frig though good idea /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif.

Derek -- It wasn't too bad, but bad enough. Big flakes early in the morning changed over the sleet and then rain. By noon it was icy enough so my wife put the nose of my car in a snowbank and caused $1100 damage. I can't be critical of her driving skills, though, since she still has veto power over my tractor upgrade decision.

I didn't plow last night because the forecast called for more rain. It never arrived, but the snow was wet and very sloppy. Had to plow this morning as there was about 6" of heavy snow on the ground, and even a couple of trees down across the road. Did I mention my Husky 372? Love that chainsaw!

Anyway, I used the ATV with plow for the road since at 15mph it throws the stuff far to the side, and got the driveway with the Kubota. It's still snowing now: 10:20am.

I really need a bigger tractor! Pete

I guess your on your 12 hour shift of plowing about now Derek.

Glad you have your side plow ready to go,and looks like your going to be a tad busy this weekend. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

2 inches of slush on the bottom and 3 inches of wet, follow by 1 inch of fluff and still snowing even harder. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

How does that old cheerleader song go...push'em back push'em way back. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Hope your wife okay.

You should have just about this storm clean up..sure sounds like you had a long day. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

15mph on ATV plowing...yikes...have you hit anything frozen before that took you off the seat.

Maybe a snowblower for your tractor what you need...opps you said you wanted a bigger tractor, and after today maybe your wife won't veto the purchase of bigger tractor. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Hang in there..mud season about 3 months away.

Mud season -- now there's a cheerful thought!!! The little Honda Civic stays in the garage till it's over. The poor Pathfinder slogging thru mud up to its axles. Idiot tourists getting stuck in the mud and leaving their vehicles in the middle of the road till it freezes solid. Somewhere I have a photo of the perfect outline of a Mercedes sedan in the mud. The driver got stuck and left it till morning. In the morning, of course, the mud was frozen. The wrecker got the car out, but left the exhaust system and all of the undercoating stuck in the road!

I has been weird here too. Today they were calling for snow most the day. Never started snowing till early afternoon. Snowing like heck when I left work at 6pm. They are calling for 3 to 6 tonite, we've got 4 in the valley and still snowing. Hope it's not too much, pretty heavy stuff. AS my dad says "will measure it in the morning".

How does the ATV work for plowing. I am starting to see a lot with plows, 4x4 with chains on all 4. They seem kinda light to get good traction. I've only driven one a couple of times in the summer.

You might try making your wife a nice romantic dinner, helping out with the domestic engineering, and telling her it WASN'T really her faulty (the snowbank must of moved /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif). This technique only works for a little while. If I do stuff like that the first thing my wife says "what do you want know?" /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif/w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif. All joking aside, I hope she nor someone else didn't get hurt.

What tractors have you considered? With a cab?
