Here is a modern (1890's) woodcutter located at King's Landing Historical Settlement, NB, Canada. The log sets on a carriage that is advanced by a ratchet mechanism on the spiked drum. The pulley ratio from the horse power to the saw crank is about 4:1, so the saw can move quite fast. However, it seemed like forever to cut the log, due in part to an unco-operative horse and also possibly due to a dull saw. I think two good men on a crosscut saw could easily beat it (but maybe not for long). I remember my father bucking firewood by hand with a buck saw (also known around here as a pulp saw). I'm glad I have my power toys to do all that.

That's cool, I did not know that firewood processors had been around that long.
