A Drinking Problem

So how did all the abstainers survive anyway? Or were they closet drinkers?

That is a VERY good question! Perhaps they just visited the "little house out back from the main house" a lot more!:)

I know on sea voyages, that the water stored in the water casks became pretty "brackish" over a long sea voyage, and rum was put in to upon serving. That is what grog is. Plus the sailors liked it. I don't thing there were any tee-totaling sailors in the days of sail.

The alcohol in beer doesn't make undrinkable water drinkable. The boiling in the brewing process does. Coffee or tea or even boiled plain water would work. I saw a claim recently that the scientific revolution was triggered by the introduction of coffee into Europe, people went from drinking beer all day to drinking coffee. I could see a slight increase in intellectual activity resulting from that.

According to the History channel, it looks like beer might have been responsible for the rise of agriculture and politics:

Did Beer Spur the Rise of Agriculture and Politics?

If they're right, I'm glad they helped agriculture, but I wish they hadn't helped politics along!

The problem in D.C is there is entirely too much wine and drugs flowing freely that has shaped one heck of a mess. Add the perverts and criminals and ...oh wait...we have a Congress. Yikes

Now it is understood that
a littler eye opener to start the day is OK.
A mid morning Pick Me upper is fine.
A little something at lunch time is spot on.
An afternoon break with a snort or 2 is well understood.
Naturally at quitting time A few drinks is only natural.
A little something before supper is a good way to help your appetite.
Of course after supper its good to have a nice relaxing drink.
& Nothing beats a Night Cap to help you sleep.

BUT This Damm Sip, Sip all day long Has Got to Stop.

I'll Drink to that.
Cheers.

Good One -AH so true.

It is said that if you drink alone your an alcoholic. I don't have to worry on that point. My dogs never let me outside alone. Like to sit on the deck & enjoy the quite, while sipping a beer or 2.
Isn't there an old saying?? " A beer a day keeps the doctor away".
