He gave me some money a couple of months ago when I was short, so I got a chance to repay him.

Well I don't know what he gave you (how much) but it must have been a good amount. Thats a pretty extensive remodel of that body, and a real nice job! It's nice to hear about folks helping each other out.:thumbsup:

Can you mount the gooseneck set-up behind the rear axle? If so how far back. I want to use a Dump truck to transport a gooseneck trailer. Is this possible?

The reason we shortened the bed was so we could mount the ball ahead of the rear axle. I was shooting for 4", we might only be able to go 2", because even with the angled corners we're still only going to have 2" of clearance if the ball is 4" ahead of the center line. I was taught the reason you mount the ball ahead of the axle is to transfer some of the weight to the front axle, if the ball is behind the rear axle you lose that. I'm not qualified to say how far back you can safely go with the ball, personally I've never run one and farther back than the axle centerline.

He gave me enough to make it a fair trade and I still went above beyond and considered it interest. He paid for the materials too.

2" is very tight. Imagine that the ground may not be prefectly level and that when going over a big hump that the trailer could wack the bed if you only left two inches down there.

I agree, that's why I'm thinking of mounting the ball 2" ahead or even over the center, instead of 4" ahead, like I would like to, to give us a little more clearance. The suspension on that 550 will handle the ball being over the center with no problem.

Short answer, Yes.

Kinda hard to get an exact measurement since I bought my truck used with the ball installed. I'm guessing mine is 1" ahead of axle centerline. I recently scaled a load that added 3200lbs to my pickup rear axle and only added 120lbs to the front axle. I was surprised. I wouldn't want mine back any further.

These last two are of the tail lights, which turned out pretty well too, IMHO.

Big difference in the before and after pics. Thanks for letting us see your fine work and the descriptive narrative.

He may wind up missing those racks though. Looks like they would come in handy. Uses and needs do change.

Thanks again and may I say, "good job".
