OK, I took the plunge and bought an 8 year old L4310 with 1137 hours on it. after running the new Land's Pride mower for a couple of hours I have some questions.

First, any suggestions on reasonably priced bumpers/grill guards. I do a lot of mowing where the grass and weeds are as tall as the tractor and a little sapling or something is bound to break a headlight or bend some metal in no time. I've always built a very heavy bumper for every tractor I've owned so that extends the width of the front tires. Otherwise the paint on the front axle and grill will be gone soon. Does anyone sell these, or have a picture of one to give me an idea of how to build one?

The second question is about the hydraulic lift. After adjusting the rotary cutter to a height I noticed that it immediately started creeping down lower and scalping the ground. The 3 point hitch doesn't stay where you put it. The only adjustable "stop" in that slot that contains the lever was at the top, all the way up so the lever hit it when you raise the lift to the highest position. I had to WD-40 it loose and move it to the lower side of the lever to stop it at the correct height or otherwise I would have to ride with my hand on the lever. Is there a stop missing? Is the lever supposed to stay in place without something to stop it, or was the adjustable stop just in the wrong place? All the IH tractors I've owned in the past stayed where you put them, but this one moves very easily.

What is that arm on the 3 point hitch called that is adjustable to level out you implements? The one on this tractor is bent. Looks like a PTO shaft came loose or broke and flopped over and bent it, making it impossible to turn. I've got to call Southside Equipment Company and talk to them about that. I doubt that they noticed it either when they took this tractor in on trade.

The 3rd question is about owner's manuals. Is there a downloadable version of the owner's manual for this tractor for free anywhere, if not where is a good source to buy a hard copy of the manual. I'll probably end up buying a parts manual before it is over. I've never owned a machine that I didn't eventually buy one.

OK that's all the questions. Man do I love the stability of this tractor. I am so sold on 4wd. I rolled right over boggy ground that would have mired my old 2wd and this baby didn't even leave a mark. There is not a square foot of my place I can't mow now and I love it. I can get closer to the pond without going in, go down steep hills without tires skidding. It is awesome and so much safer IMO. OH, and I got the hydrostatic tranny. Didn't know it had it till I got there. Wow is that cool. Not much hassel backing up. Changes the way you drive. Any tips on how to position your foot on that pedal? Thanks for the help.

One more question. What is the appropriate idle speed. My tractor idles at 1000 RPM's. Seems too fast to me.

I have a L4400. In regards to the grill guard issue, I would like to offer this suggestion. My L4400 came with a FEL and a front grill guard. Most grill guards have open spaces, where a stick or other object can protrude through the grill guard and damage your radiator or other sections of your tractor. I would recommend welding on some expanded metal to the front grill to lesson the chances of the preceding incidents occurring. This is what I recently did to my tractor. Just a thought? Best wishes.

Expanded metal, good idea. Added strength and protection. Top link, got it. Thanks.

I'm not talking about the arm that levels the hitch front to back. I'm talking about the vertical arm on the right side that has a lever that you spin to make it longer or shorter leveling it left to right. The left side arm is a fixed length, the right one is adjustable making the right side of the bush hog higher or lower. That is the one that is bent. I got a new top pin with my new mower.

Lifting Rod.
As you are aware, the left lifting rod is fixed. The Right lifting Rod is used to level a 3 point mounted implement from side to side by turning the adjusting handle to shorten or lengthen the adjustable lifting rod with the implement on the ground. After adjustment, be sure to tighten the lock nut securely.

As to your 3 pt control drifting down, must be a friction device on the lever pivot that needs adjustment. I had a L3710 for 9 years and no problem - the control lever stayed where I put it.
