A good way to get a burn pile going with green wood

I can understand some places have a fire ban when there’s an increased danger based on actual conditions. Fire bans based on calendar dates disconnected from real conditions is idiotic.
….but why would a ban just be from 6:00am to 6:00 pm?
Is the sun so bright or the dew so heavy the conditions flip flop every 12 hours?

I have not burned in years, but when I did, I would ALWAYS get a burn permit. At the time, I had to go to the local farm store to get the permit, but I think the permits are online now. For every permit where I actually started a fire, I bet I had two or three I pulled but did not use. I would only start a burn if the conditions were safe. If there was wind or it was not wet enough, I would not burn. I would try to time a burn after we had some rain, and when the forecast has rain showing up in a day or so after I would burn. If those conditions did not happen, I would not burn even though I had a permit.

One of my neighbors started a burn and it got away from him. The VFD and NC fire service had to put out the fire. I don't think he needed a permit, nor do I think he was fined, but he sure was scared and embarrassed.

Later,
Dan

For all those "when the fire get's out of control" cops, Burning when there is snow on the ground just makes so much sense. I have never NEEDED to burn a pile in summer.

For those that don't get snow... Tuff it up and pay to have the stuff hauled off ;-)
Yeah. In my state no burn permit is required if there's snow on the ground, though some cities may have restrictions.

I haven't done a burn pile in ages, I'll just make big brush piles around the perimeter of fields, back in the woods, etc. and let nature take its course. Generally rots down pretty fast...those piles never seem to get any bigger even though I add to them every year. Added bonus, it gives shelter to wildlife.

Hey, don't mess with the rules guy.
Been on the engine and had to bust up piles and put them out in my volunteer days.

Really sucked when tires and trash are in the piles. You get filthy, the gear and hoses is a mess. A few times got out structure gear and SCBA cause the fumes were so nasty. Spent hours cleaning gear.

I start the fire from the up wind side with some dry wood and I would add oil or mix gas, but just wait a month and they will dry pretty quickly.
