I just got an optical mouse (no need for a mouse pad) that has additional buttons you can program, plus a wheel between the standard left and right buttons. I've programmed one of the additional buttons, the one that falls right under my thumb, to go back. So I don't have to go waaaaay up to the top of the browser window to click on the Back arrow. The wheel makes it real easy to page down through all the forums looking for forums with new messages.

That's why I love Opera.. just touch the right mouse button and move the mouse slightly to the left.. and you go back. It has lots of other neat features with mouse movements, but I haven't gotten around to playing with them yet.

Of course the drawback is that posting a message here with Opera is a pain. You always get the error message that some fields were not filled in, even when they are. You have to go back and click again on "Continue". Sometimes it takes 4 or 5 attempts. But Opera keeps getting better.. maybe someday this will get fixed.

Mike I have had the optical mouse for awhile and love it. Did you get the wireless one? I did and it is great now I can put the mouse anywhere on my desk and use it.

Mike, I did the same. Using the additional button for "back" really is usefull. Picked up the Logitech w/2 opticals on a cord as I did not want to have to replace the batteries. Happy New Year to all.

I didn't opt for the wireless. My desk area at home is rather small and the only place the mouse can go is to the right of my LCD monitor. No place for a wireless mouse to roam. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Initially, I went with Opera because it was faster plus I liked the features you mentioned. The posting problem is why I stopped using it. IE6 seems just as fast.

My mouse stopped working the other night. Couldn't figure out what happened. Then it came to me... change the batteries, it's cordless! The batteries lasted exactly one year as we got it last Christmas.

Mike,
That's what the little wheel is for/w3tcompact/icons/cool.gif How do you teach it to go back?

My MS mouse came with Intellimouse software which is where you configure the buttons. At work, where I have a regular wheel mouse, I programmed the wheel so when you click it, it's the same as clicking on the Back icon.

That's neat, but I took all the buttons off my browser years ago when I learned what the quick keys were. Back button is the <ALT><left arrow> combo (and forward is the <ALT><right arrow>). Refresh is <CTRL><r>; and so on. I try to use the mouse as little as possible. The other side benefit is that by turning off the buttons, you get a little bit more display area.
