I would assume if he swapped gear boxes, he swapped complete units, including blades.

I don't have a way to measure my pto speed but it sure seems to speed up and slow down with the speed of the engine. I know 540 rpm is standard but at what engine speed?

Pro rpm is ratio locked to engine rpm. Most tractor tach have a mark where you hit 540 on the pto

I'm making no assumptions. Just going by the ops statements, including the one where the mower worked fine on another tractor. ;)

I've been trying to figure out why that mark was on the tach.

Without seeing a picture from behind, like with the NH tractor, I'm only guessing the wheel spacing on the other tractor would be wider, and blades making contact at a different angle. More than likely blades hitting the downed grass from the side, rather than straight forward, towards the already downed grass, also leaning forward.

Even with a single deck mower that is wider than the wheel tracks on the tractor, your going to leave a streak on the side the blade is coming forward if it happens to be inline with the tractor wheel in tall weeds/grass. However, on the next round, depending on how far you stay over on the already cut portion, the side with the blade cutting towards the back, may cut most of that streak out.
