options ...

phone your orders in the day before , have them box and tape closed for you ... then just stop by long enough to pick them up and pay for them ..

too much still ? .. do the above , then have a neighbor ( or one of their kids ) pick them up for you ( and give them the checks to pay the stores ) ... and give the neighbor something for the effort ...

if you have someone you can get along with , have them drive ( one less stress thing ) ... and share the cost of gas ...

There's a company that will do all that for you, even deliver to your door. It's called Amazon. A hermit's best friend.

I seem to be getting better at it. When I worked I put 30k miles a year on a truck. When I first retired it dropped to 20k....this past year ...10k. It's a 50 mile round trip to town that I do more than I like. Maybe another year I can get that mileage down to 5k.....workin' on it.

My pick up is a 97 & it just turned over 95,000 miles. And part of that was for business before I retired.
Town to the edge is 25 miles, but most stores are another 3 to 8 miles.

hummm my pickup has not had more than 2 K in last 4 years, all for business lol... BUT I do have the DD thunderbird which has well over 200K. Still working has me driving it all the time but I do my best to simply stay to myself.

Moving to the farm or somewhere farther out is what sounds most appealing.

Crash, as a Wisconsin resident, I am concerned about your beer intake. Seems awfully low to me... :D

Sort of have to go at least twice a month. Milk beer & dog food.
.

If you can be self sufficient on everything but milk, beer and dog food twice a month, I am very impressed. My wife can't exist one day without going to town. I can last about a week.

Yeah same here... wife goes in daily to the gym and hits the grocery store or goodwill, etc. Me once or twice a week, Home Depot usually. I work from home but I travel a lot on business. But when I am home, I enjoy my time at home! Sorry to hear though that folks aren't enjoying the interactions with the folks in town. I go in with a smile on my face, joke with the cashier or people in the aisle, and almost always get a laugh. If I don't... at least I feel I tried. Attitude breeds attitude I say.

No argument from me! I have lived here with just my dog for 5 years and never regret the move. I'm 1.5 hours away mostly on dirt roads from the nearest city (ignore the ripoff merchants at the closer village) and go every 2nd week on average for supplies. I could manage for longer but I need petrol for the generators (no mains here) and LPG for the gas fridge where space is limited and I do like fresh milk - and good Australian wine!.

The city people are very mixed - some excellent but several real sh#theads but for building materials, tractor, hardware bits etc there is no choice. For many things, the Internet is great - order on line, get postal delivery to the corner of the road. My office where I do some work on the Internet overlooks the dam and bushland. The record collection keeps me amused. The dog and the possums are real friends - so who needs humans?
