A lost Asset in Auto Transmissions

Until recently the automatic tranny was useful in conditions such as snow, ice, sand or mud and worked equally well in all of those conditions. To start from a dead stop under those conditions we were able to select 2 on the shift selector, ease down on the accelerator to begin forward motion by not spinning and losing traction and then shift to D etc. when ever we felt it to be correct.

Not so now, at least on my wife's car. I ask the dealer about this before purchase and his reply was to use the manual mode shift position. The dealer sales staff need to read the manual, and possibly better drive it, to learn how their product works. They have lost that feature.

Some may say, so what. I didn't even know that was possible. Those may not have ever had to walk a few miles in snow or mud or because of sand.

Dang it...
Now I've got to go home and do some 2nd gear starts in my vehicles...lol
Just as an aside...
Back in the 60's I was taught how to drive by my pap paw on his old 58 Apache pickup truck...
3 on the column...
I remember vividly the first time I tried to drive an automatic pick up and did not know what to do...
Looked for the clutch and it was not there...

Throw me in the camp that has never seen an automatic allow 2nd gear starts manually.
1997 Volvo V90, when you use "Winter" mode, it starts in 3rd or 2nd:

Winter/Wet mode
Enhanced Vehicle Traction
This mode may be selected for starting/moving off on slippery roads or to lower downshift speeds if the transmission is in "L".
Mode W
* In position D, the gearbox starts in third gear and changes up to fourth gear.
* In position 3, second gear is locked and there is no change up to third gear. In position L, first gear is locked.
* These positions always offer the kick-down feature.

My '93 S10 had the second gear start. So did my '97 Silverado and 2005 Trailblazer. My current '99 Silverado and 2008 Suburban also have the second gear start. I believe Mom's '96 Beretta also had the second gear start, but not 100% sure on that one. I know at one point it was fairly common for vehicles to have the second gear start.

2008 Toyota Landcruiser Colorado 3.0 diesel has a "2nd Start" button, can't say I ever needed it though, even in snow. I'm not sure if this model would have been sold in the US, but I think it was called Land Cruiser Prado in some countries.

Makes good sense, with the Tq output of a 3L diesel.

BTW Blue, you may get PM's requesting compensation for damaged keyboards - certain people over here are drooling over their keyboards right now, as the last new Toyota diesel was sold in these markets a very long time ago.

Haha, hold your excitement! The diesel I have driven is a great lumbering 4 cylinder 3.0. Plenty of torque but no power. Have towed a 40 tonne truck with one on more than one occasion.

The bigger Amazon model has the V8 diesel I think, but they are so expensive only the landed gentry can afford one.
