The idea of such a small item was the reason wanted. still, 2-way radios were in use. radio was Motorola .salesmn brought into the shop still tube type. The 2-way radio had a transistor power supply.60 watt then increased to 100 were able to talk 100 miles on the radio in the vehicle.You mean a tie tack with a TI 4000 series 14 pin IC?
Years ago I had a tie tack with a 555 chip on it.
Our microwave system was tube type and telephone carriers same.
No interstate highways, cell phones, only C'B radios for personal communications. Life was Good.
