BEF, I echo what the fellas said and many thanks for the photos. I like to look at the real photos taken during WW2. It is a history that is fading fast with our vets. That generation was taxed with a huge endeavor and changed the course of history of which many seem to forget, God bless them all.

belated happy Birthday thanks for your service.
Saturday my family celebrated my Dad's 90th Birthday. He is a WW2 veteran and volunteered to go, landed on omaha beach a week or so after Dday. Here's a pic of him at age 20, taken in Belgium.

I have to ask, why is your Grandfather holding a Mauser? Battleground pick up?

It's my Dad. I don't know what type of rifle it is, I'll have to ask him if it was a german one.

Happy Birthday to your Pop, Thank him for his service.

And yes, that is a German bolt action 98K Mauser, 7.92 mm, one of the finest bolt guns ever made.

Thanks for posting this, BuckeyeFarmer! And MANY THANKS to your dad as well.

My dad (now 79 years old) was in the USAF from 1954 to 1974. From '68 to '72 we were stationed in Germany and I was fortunate that my parents took us all over Europe (in our '70 VW camper ). I remember going down the French coast and seeing all the pillboxes that the Germans used as their Atlantic wall. We stopped a couple of times and looked in them - they were massive! One of my most vivid memories is stopping at the US cemetery in Luxembourg where Patton is buried. As a kid, seeing all of the crosses, it really struck me how many people died for us. Also, there were still a lot of buildings all over Europe that still bore the marks of the war - bomb damage, bullets, etc. I could go on and on about all the stuff I remember from over there that shaped my views now (and appreciation of that generation!) but I won't bore you guys.

In MD, you probably live close enough to DC that you've taken your dad to the WWII memorial. I'm sure he appreciated that.

Here's a link to Honor Flight in case any of you guys haven't heard of it. GREAT organization!! They have chapters all over the US.
