a new form of state taxation

Well, I just registered the 2004 Chevy 1T dump truck I recently bought. The state never used to be this greedy. Thought I'd post some info on what NY charges. It cost me the following:
Plates - $25.00 (years ago the plates were considered part of the registration. Now they charge for plates in addition to registration)
Title transfer - $50.00 (Used to be $10.00. That's a 500% increase)
Use fee - $20.00 ($10 yr x 2, I thought that was why I registered the vehicle, to use it) Use fee magically appeared several years ago.
Registration - $230.50 (115.25 yr x 2 yrs for a 16,000 lb commercial vehicle) Rates used to be much lower.
Total - $325.50
Each 2 years hereafter the renewal will cost $250.50 (reg. and use fee) This will probably be increased by the time I need to renew or there will be another additional fee.
On top of all these fees the state also charges 8% sales tax on the purchase price every time a vehicle is sold to someone and they want to register it.

If you want to take a car off the road you must first turn in the plates to DMV (for which they charge you $1 to take the plates back) then they give you a receipt to give to your insurance company so you can cancel your insurance. You can't cancel insurance until they get the receipt. If you think you can get around that by not paying insurance, the insurance company would then notify DMV of non payment and DMV will suspend your license and any other vehicle registration you have in your name.
The insurance companies are no better. Every vehicle registered in NY must have insurance or you can't register it. Yet the insurance company charges an annual fee in our policies for uninsured motorist among other state mandated fees.

Classic vehicles here are $28.75 each year plus use fee. (The vehicle has to be 25 years or older) Classics are about the best deal for lowest fees and insurance costs.

This State and my insurance companies love people like me. I have registered 1 Pickup, 1 Dump truck, 1 Camaro, 2 Classic cars, 1 four wheeler, 1 motorcycle, and 3 trailers. I'm surprised they haven't forced us to register our lawn mowers and tractors.

Welcome to the land of taxes.

I use to keep 16 active registrations with insurance... no break for older collector cars.

My 85 Chevy Van is $242 to the State plus nearly $70 for inspection.

23 years ago I paid $6500 for it.

I've paid the state through license and inspection about the same as I paid for the vehicle.

Most of the other cars are now registered non-op at $18 each.

California...

I know of a great old dump bought new by a friend... I was going to buy it and then I checked the license fees and the fact the Diesel is now non-compliant.
