You're close! As I was getting my camera out of the van, I accidentally pressed the shutter while the camera was pointed at the driver's seat upholstery. I had no idea it would focus that close. I can probably get away with this kind of useless post once... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

My aging digital Sony Mavica, bought when digital cameras were fairly new, about 6 years ago, and abused almost beyond belief. It has a maximum resolution of 640x480 and 2 modes, "Fine" and "Standard" (Fine uses less compression). I never use anything but "Standard". Moreover, the camera was nearly face down on the seat, and that was ambient light. I thought it was pretty incredible, too, considering that the lens was no more than 1" from the seat probably closer, and I accidentally clicked the shutter.

If you're not familiar with the Mavica, it stores the pictures directly onto a 3.5" floppy disk in .jpg format. so all you have to do to use the pictures is slide the disk into any computer. It stores from 22 to 44 pictures per floppy, according to some mysterious algorithm I haven't figured out, yet (it has 6 different modes from portrait to high speed to landscape, and I think that makes a difference). Sometimes more, sometimes less. I just carry several floppies with me.

My actual model is FD71, long since replaced by newer models. I just checked, however, and the focus should not have been a surprise, because the 10x optical zoom will focus down to 1/2"!

It's only 330,000 pixels, so the shots do not blow up well, but it's perfect for the web, which is where I've always used it. Printing shots at 4"x6" on good quality paper is OK. I don't need anything more.

Don,

I know what you mean about those Mavicas. I have an old Sony Mavica FD-91 and refuse to 'trade up' to anything newer. I have 14X OPTICAL zoom with mine and haven't seen anything that good that I can afford since. Digital zoom loses too much clarity for me and most newer cameras don't have anywhere near 14X optical zoom anymore. About the best I see is 10X.

The clarity and detail I get with mine is fantastic. I can't imagine needing anything more.
