Just thought I would jump in and change the post back to were it started. This is part of my land in the northern part of Columbia county NY. I hope to start building the house when winters over. This will be what I will be looking at out my back window.

Mark,
Was looking at the pics on your home page. Stephen looks to be a brave young man. Looks like he's been thru alot. Nice to see that he's doing well.

Actually, the silo is a wreck. It is structurally sound, but the top and bottom are a mess. I like the storage of the barn but have no plans for animals so the silo is more in the way than anything else.

The most amazing thing about Stephen is he's gone through ~30 "procedures/surgeries" in his 11 years, yet he has a great attitude.

Gerard, Syracuse NY. Just in the backyard for you. The land we are buying is in the Maritta NY. No closing yet so I don't know taxes. But based my on future neighbors tax bill $150k assessed house/land they are paying $900 propety and $1800 School (Marcellus). So I am not sure what our bill will be. But since I chose the land the cost of living on it didn't compute until now. But we love it and are going for it.

Dave, I have to agree with you on the school tax issue. I feel that Albany doesn't pay enough attention to the fact that we pay the tax burden. NPR was interviewing the head of the board of regents and he was discussing that they need $500 million more this year to meet the new standards set in place for kids to graduate. The state doesn't know where it will come from. Well reach into Sheldon Silverman's Pocket and his other buddy and I bet we can find some loose change.

While I too won't be having kids I realize the need for everyone to carry the burden of school taxes otherwise everyone falls behind in schools. But the law states that non district will ever get less money year over year than it did the previuos year. So have districts like Jamesville DeWitt that are very well off, but others in more rural areas that have short fall.

One of the biggest drawbacks for us in NY is that we can't (won't) have a on time budget. I believe we are in year 14 of this dilema. Our state budget deadline is April 1st. It would be a great joke if we could get it on time. Schools have raised taxes to pay for the anticipated short fall, and the legislators get paid even though state employees don't.

It is a beautiful state that I plan on living in for a long time, but I will be a property owner and tax payer (apartment dweller right now) that will not be quiet as my money is squandered on how many jets and helicopters does our state own?

Soap box closed.

I wonder whether you'd like Texas' "Robin Hood" law better? They take money from the rich districts and give it to the poor ones.
