It was sort of an inside joke. It was a reference to a previous debate in which I had to defend reality against the onslaught of many well intentioned but mistaken folk. If you are bored, have time on your hands or want to see how frivolous we can get then search for and read the thread "Tire Overtreads--A Needed Invention" and any progeny. Egon's comment puts him squarely in agreement with me on the side of reality but for some reason that seems to make him uncomfortable or something.

I am in the midst of reading the "Tire Overtreads--A Needed Invention" thread.
That thread is a fascinating example of how internet forums should, but usually don't, work.
A tip of the lid to patrickg and heyden (as well as others) for a thread that is chock full of intelligent discourse, humor, civility, and excellent writing.
Hope you two have at it again soon.
(I would like to throw in my two cents worth on whether the bulldozer goes faster with thicker tracks, but will wait until I read the whole thing. My gut feel is that it does not.)

I almost strapped on my armor, picked up my sword, and mounted my charger when I read, "I would like to throw in my two cents worth on whether the bulldozer goes faster with thicker tracks, but will wait until I read the whole thing. My gut feel is that it does not.", but I decided that since you were going to read on through to the end, I'd wait and let reality overcome you. Now we will see if first impressions can be overridden by logic, physics, and math. (wink wink) Best I could do being emoticon impaired as I am. One bright young lad was moved to make a model to support his contention but was surprised to find the opposite of his convictions. Won't say what he believed, or found out, that would be like giving away the ending of a movie.

This is the formula we used in the Air Force when we had to determine line of sight to the horizon for radar installation.
Rm=1.219 X (Sqrt Hr) Where Rm is range in miles, Hr is height of the radar. So, for the 6 foot man, it's:
1.21 X 2.4494897427831780981972840747059 = 2.9859279964526941017024892870665 miles. Or we could round it off and come out to about 2.98 miles.
or, we can work backwards and find that for one mile we have 8 inches of height, or a 4 inch "depression" in the middle of our one mile garage.
Or, an 1859 foot garage will have a 1/2 inch depression at the center. You give me an 1859 foot garage, and I'll live with the 1/2 inch. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Oh, as for the thicker tracks, yes. Assuming the drive sprocket stays the same, then a thicker track is like an over sized tire. You'll go faster, but lose a little power.

Actually I spread the "GOSPELL" on this with misionary zeal months back when this was a fresh topic. I went to great lengths to give the masses insight into the TRUTH, yea verily I railed against the darknes of ignorance, ad infinitum, ad naseum and to use another analogy, it was a consuming activity at the moment but after I hit the flush handle I nerver looked back, it was a done deal.
So PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE everyone don't line up to tell me the answer to the thicker tracks issue. I know the answer. (Don't confuse me with your facts, my mind is made up!) Everyone of every original persuasion in the TRACK HOLY WAR knows the answer, even if through conversion by the sword or fatigue. Everyone even passing by casually at the time of the great blood letting, knows the answer.
I recommend that if there is any residual interest in the issue, those with that interest should start a thread devoted to that topic AFTER having read the previous thread.
On this topic, I choose to be a non combatant! I am at peace with all participants and regret any unintended collateral damage.
