Gave it a few minutes to fill up with exhaust fumes and started wire welding away on it.

Exhaust fumes mixed with oxygen to the proper ratio are explosive. Using exhaust fumes is not an accepted welding procedure.:thumbsup:

I wonder if you could accomplish the same thing with a tube running off a MIG tank.

I went to welding school for a time in the 60's. The instructor said there was one gas tank that would be safe to weld on. Take the tank off the vehicle, fill it with water. Let it sit enough years that the water caused big holes of rusted out places to appear. A few more years should pass, so that little remaining metal was evident, now it probably is safe to light your torch---or strike the arc.
