A stupid quesiton..Where does the shear pin go

I just purchased a used tiller that was converted to a 3-point hitch from a 2-point. The guy who sold it to me told me I need to do some modifications to get my drive line to work, but then said he was told there is no need for a shear pin or slip cluch with a tiller??? So my question is, where would a shear pin go and what does it look like. Is it on the PTO output shaft of the tractor or the input shaft of the tiller?? I was looking at my brush hog and really can not tell where the shear pin is??? Pls help, I want to get this tiller working in the next couple of weeks.

In the collar that slides onto the shaft of the tiller, rotary cutter, etc. there is a shear pin (basically a bolt) that goes thru the collar and shaft. If the implement hits something hard, the collar will shear off the bolt so that the implement can stop even though the PTO shaft is still turning.
The shear pin is there to protect your implement and your tractor. It should shear before something expensive on your tractor or implement breaks.

The shear pin won't be on the tractor pto stub end.. it would be useless, as there are splines in the yoke.. Now.. on te implement end of the drive.. usually the pto shaft yoke is smooth, and te gearbox input is smoth.. and they are mated with a shear pin ( soft bolt ) thru them.

Might also see a slip clutch installed on the implement end instead of a shear pin.. both serve to limit torque..

Cant be a shearpin on the tractor end and not on the input shaft end of the machine(if it is a splined shaft)--Most Greymarket rototillers that I have seen are splined on the input shaft?--Ken Sweet

Yep, probably splined on both ends ... and in the middle for that matter. I just picked up a Yanny RS1200 that's just that way. No fuse at all except for the tiller gearbox or my BX gearbox /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

BTW, anybody know where to buy tines, cheap, for one of those babies?

You can most likely get your tines from Wayne at LMTCompany. He is a dealer and posts here often. I asked about a RSA1302 tiller and he said that he could get a set of tines for it.

This may be a grey market tiller being it is splinded on the tiller end, I was told it was made by Mitsubishi...I was looking at drive shafts at http://www.ptoshafts.com/newpage75.htm for example. If I am looking at this correctly doesn't the yolk which attaches to the splined body go on the tiller end. Wouldn't this give me a "fused" point to protect all other parts??? Or will this not work at all???

I would replace the roll pin #5 in that drawing, but as I remember from mine that would be hard to get to. The one at #9 would work just as well. A common hardware bolt with a smooth head, no slash marks, small enough for the hole will break before any of the other stuff on that arrangement . You might already have a pin in that hole that has a reduced diameter somewhere along it length. That is what a shear pin is. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
