I have a cherry that ate a locust post that had been leaning against it for years. Just about any tree will eat a wire fence, horseshoe, maple tap, etc. I've found enough that it became unremarkable when running into one (and doing a number on a chain).
This is the primary reason sawmill workers must wear eye protection, some go as far as x-raying trees. Mills in my area normally won't take a yard tree or boundary tree figuring that over the decades somebody had to have hammered something into it. Goodbye veneer blade, hello shrapnel.
