The only way this could have been better would be if there was Duct Tape and WD 40 in the story!

Sorry. Just electrical tape and CRC lube on a few moving parts on the old welder.

As a follow up to this story, I ended up selling the old AC welder for just over twice what I paid for it. I was happy with that, and the old guy that bought it was more than happy. He told me about how his son had bought him a nice new MIG welder, but that he was used to the old AC stick. I guess he welded many miles of rod in his life. He handled that welder like it was a dear old friend.

The way I spliced was to use short (like 2-3") of copper tubing that fitted the bared leads
and with plumbers torch, flux and solder I simply solder the splice.
A sleeve made from appropriate hose or other rubber tubing acts as insulated protection.
If available to you, heat shrink sleeves are best.
A cheap and effective splice!

I think I'd have just picked up some 20' or 25' heavy duty jumper cables.

I have those, too. I'm looking for a steal on some tweeco connectors or something like that to make extensions for the leads I have now.
