What about a hairy back .. While walking barefoot thru the hen house one slipped and fell flat on the back!!

This gutter going conversation reminds of working on the chain link bed truck. Two guys were working with me on it and they constantly complained about the chicken poop our inspection crew left. I refused to pen the old girls up and they would come by a couple of times a day to check progress.

If I had been smart I would have mentioned the stuff makes something else grow besides hair........

OK Jim, came back to see if ya updated since I get more info in the Winter thread:laughing:

I guess if you're going for round 2 at the "buffet", it might as well be in the late winter time. That garden will be hollering at you by the time you finish, so at least the timing is good:thumbsup:

Dennis, I was so busy yesterday that I didn't have time to update this thread.

As we drove to Wichita Falls yesterday, it became very clear that they didn't have nearly as much sleet and ice as here; maybe half. The extremely efficient Texas Oncology Clinic had me into the lab and to see my doctor within 20 minutes of arriving. I mentioned to the doctor that I had noticed my appointment and status sheet had said this was the last treatment except for the Zolendronic acid once a month until July. He said yes, but that we were now starting on the 2nd course of chemo and there would be 4 treatments 3 weeks apart for a total of 12 weeks. That means it ends in March. After that course and my next PET scan, they'll test my hormone levels too to decide if I need Tamoxifen. Thats the hormone blocker. It plugs up the "pie hole" in the cancer cell that normally is a receptor for feeding on the hormone. Since the hormone can't get in, the cancer sell dies of starvation.

I also questioned the doctor about my stamina. I explained that some days climbing one flight of steps would have me breathing heavily. Other days seem to be less strenuous. He looked at my hemoglobin level and said it is down significantly since the first blood test. I asked if he thought it was heart or lung issue, and he said my echo cardiogram before starting chemo showed my heart to be very strong with no problems. Whew!!! He said that chemo just reduces your body's energy level so that you are always working tired. He suggested I eat more red meat and green veggies to increase my hemoglobin. WOOHOO! Steak and salad for me. My wife bought three big ol' juicy rib-eyes at Sam's yesterday. Can you say "weekend cookout" boys and girls? :D

The garden? Well, Kathy and I have already talked about what we will do this year if possible. We'll have a few tomatoes (probably BHN 602 since they grew so well last year and are on a short sturdy plant). We'll also plant banana peppers. That and our existing asparagus will be our garden and I'll just keep the rest tilled and maybe spread some compost in prep for 2015. Our freezers are full of veggies and I must have 40 jars of pickles. I don't know where we would put the food if we grew it. With my health issues, that makes the most sense. Believe me, I have plenty of other projects to fill the garden void.:)

After my wife's breast cancer surgery, the Texas Oncology doctor had her taking a 20 mg Tamoxifen pill a day for about 3 years, then changed to 25 mg a day of Aromasin for 5 years, and now back to Tamoxifen. Tamoxifen is cheap, Aromasin costs about 6 times as much, but still isn't bad compared to many drugs.

I would like to add a little very positive news to this discussion, regarding cancer treatment in general.

Univ of Penn just announced last week they had an 85% remission rate by using a new technique using T cells, basically teaching the body to identify the cancer cells as bad and attack them. This is exactly the same technique my wife and I almost flew to Thailand for two years ago, and then the whole country flooded. This technique and research has been going on for a number of years internationally, and the good news is that now Stage 2 and 3 trials are starting for an approach to cancer that has genuine hope. They wanted fifty grand for the treatment in Thailand, btw, but we were told it was more like who didn't it help vs. who it did. And now in my local Philadelphia it has finally come to fruition. And I hope many other places to expedite the research.

They are going to find a way to cure this miserable disease.

well, at least for many people hopefully in a way less invasive and hurtful than chemo, radiation and major surgery.

That is everyone except my wife's primary oncologist. Of course she's been seeing the same doctor for 10 years, a really likeable fellow when you get in to see him. But my wife is almost afraid to have me go with her, because she's afraid I'm going to say something to make him mad. And that's because in 10 years, she has never (and I do mean absolutely NEVER) gotten in to see him earlier than 30 minutes past her appointment time, and only very rarely that early. It's normally between an hour and an hour and a half past her appointment time before she's called from the waiting room.

Yes they are! Thanks for the info, Drew. The learning curve and advancements in cancer treatments have a suddenly hit a steep portion of the learning curve. Things are coming so fast it is hard to keep up with them. I've been blown away with the cost of chemo drugs, but most of that is transparent to me because of my great insurance coverage.

Bird: I get to Texas Oncology about 20 minutes before my scheduled doctor's appointment. I hardly have time to make a restroom call before they are calling my name to give blood. After that, it's 5 to 10 minutes and they are taking me back to the exam room for weight and vitals. When the nurse finishes, the doctor arrives in about 2 minutes. They have a sign out in their waiting room that says, "If you have waited 20 minutes without someone seeing you, please tell the receptionist." The people in Wichita Falls really hustle, and they all seem to have a big smile on their face as well. Some of the stuff I hear them put up with from the patients would sure make me angry, but they handle all issues with rare good grace. I know I'm lucky to be going there.:)

Jim, they usually do call her to take blood within the 20 minutes, so she's been seen by someone within the 20 minutes. But then we can expect an hour or so before she goes back for the weight and vitals, and then 15 minutes to a half hour before the doctor comes in. But just as in Wichita Falls, the people are friendly enough. I don't know whether the other doctors are as slow, or as bad about scheduling, as the one is. I told my wife that's his way of showing her that he's more important than she is. I'd definitely be getting a different doctor if it were me, but my wife's easier to get along with than I am.
