On the attached picture you can see one limb that has started growing out from the base of the tree (slightly different color) that I am wondering if I should prune off the tree.mit is growing straight up through the tree and has no other limbs growing out from it. Is this a "sucker" limb that needs to be removed?

Thanks image.jpegimage.jpeg

Hi Albertc: yes, prune off anything growing straight up from another limb as you have indicated ( it is called a "waterspout" ).
Also, anything growing out from the trunk between the ground level and the first set of desired scaffolds should be removed.

we have a potted one in our house and just last week, up shot a new branch at ground level. I plan to cut it back. It's the only bit of green but the top has buds ready to open.

Fig trees can be pruned to be a tree or to be multi-caned "shrubs". They're much easier to manage as "shrubs".
