Plastic electrical conduit works the best if you are a slow learner. There's forgivable flexing in it. I just tape it to the grill guard. I also need this when scraping the gravel driveway so I don't wind up in the grass area. I use an 8' landscape rake at an angle.

Wow zz, a lot of points I didn't really consider. I may just need to get over that MMM thing. You make a good point.... more to cut without a boundary, therefore more tractor for the money I will spend. The tractor is always smaller when you get it home right? Your points are well taken and I think I'm gonna change direction, or at least shop like that for now. Any particular model you recommend?

I looked on Craigslist in the Raleigh area for you. There is a decent looking John Deere and 3 kubotas. If it was mem I'd take a seriois look at the Kubota L4610 there for $23000. Cab, loader, pretty looking. 47 hp as I recall. I'd wonder what they would take for money ! This all tells me there is a Kubota dealer nearby.

I also recommend getting over the MMM and taking a look at something bigger and a rear 3 point mower. Its really not that hard to get used to and with bigger open fields it will be that much faster and more forgiving when/ if you let things grow a little to much.

Thank you to all who have taken the time to reply and share their knowledge and experience. The information you all have provided will save me money, regret, and time! Priceless! I will continue to post as I shop for the tractor I want and seek more feedback.

The cab is another extra I never considered due to cost but wow.... would that be nice or what? I have looked at the ad you are referencing. The only thought I have about that machine is the weight and aggressive Ag tires. Do you think either of those things would create issues in the pastures?

I have loaded ag tires on my JD 1070. You'll not be able to find wheel marks or ruts in my fields. I've even cut my lawn with this tractor and an 84" Woods mower. Never been a problem.

I'm still being wish washy with the size I need. I will not be growing my own hay because open land will only be used for pasture. After going onto Google maps and doing some measuring, I will only be cutting 12 acres of pasture. There are 2 acres of wooded area, house, and 2 acre pond. My brain is spinning with tractor options and choices. I suppose the old adage "you never have enough tractor" comes into play.

Its gonna boil down to how many horses, cows, pigs, zebras, antelope and/or hippos you'll ultimately be keeping on the property. Yours, boarder's, yours and boarders, whatever. A couple of horses don't need 10 acres to chew down. Even 3 would be generous. That would mean (as it did in my case), that the unused grassland would deliver 100+ bales per acre, and that's PLENTY for two horses year 'round and sell the rest.

So, I feel there are two ranges of tractor for horse properties: the 15 - 25 hp machine for general lawn and pasture mowing, fencing, ****Flow and picking stuff up. Then there is the 30 - 45 hp machine for the larger endeavor.

Its really just about what your family plans on doing there. You can always buy a second tractor with the hay, lumber, boarding, butchering, or 'fertilizer' profits. Just about everyone around my neck of the woods who thought they wanted to ranch with horses, boarders, lumber, blah, blah, blah, was dreaming. They are dreamers and still doing it. Just can't put it together, money, time, effort, barn, chores, kids, pets, friends, sports, travel, vacations, career, lazy azz.
