Rest in Peace
when stopped waiting at a light leave enough space between you and the car ahead of you so that you can escape
The "rule of thumb" I've always used, and taught my wife and kids when they were learning to drive, is to stop far enough back that you can see where the rubber meets the road on the rear tires of the vehicle in front of you.
And, yes, it's a very good common sense rule to keep your front wheels pointed straight ahead while waiting to turn left. It's something that's been taught for years, but apparently a lot of people either don't know it or have forgotten it.
