Add weight to field cultivator???

/ Add weight to field cultivator??? #11
My small tooth cultivator will not go more than 3-4 inches deep due to the angle of teeth being not being aimed down. I added weight (rock on top) to help it dive. It may be hard on the implement but it helps get the job I need done accomplished.

I have to correct that my field cultivator is a 13 tine, not 7 and it really digs in.

Hey Kebo, for garden ground breaking, you can't beat a middle buster plow. These are so cheap. $139 at Tractor Supply with coupon.

This is the right implement for breaking up the ground. Then your cultivator will dress it nicely!! Your disk will be great for chopping up the stalks and dead rubbish in the fall and for re-working in the spring.

I fall plow and highly recommend it.

Good advice. I see several TBNers wanting to use a light disc or light cultivator to break sod and when it won't do it, they want to add weight to it to force it. Just a good way to do a poor job and stress their equipment to the breaking point.

Actually, I already have a middlebuster! Got it off of craigslist for $90 too. Sounds like I just need to make passes with it first to break it up good, then make passes with the cultivator, and then finally go over that with the harrow to cut up any big clods. Will try that and see how it works. Thanks guys!

Kebo, you have all you need to make a terrific garden bed.

The middle buster doesn't throw a nice, turned row like a share. Still, with passes spaced close together and yes, multiple times running the plow through, it will be ready for your disk (step 2), then, your cultivator to top dress (step 3).

Don't skimp on the plowing passes. Try to make one pass within 8" of the previous pass. Oh, this is sooo fun!! :D

Don't leave it all smoothed out for the winter, though. Leave it plowed up rough. That does so much good.
