I'm adding a brake controller to my stepdads 04 f250 ( diesel 6.0 4x4 ) and -may- need guidance. His truck already has the 7 pin connector ont he rear, and his paperwork states the truck was equipped with a 'tow' system.

I've found that the pertinant fuses, relay and maxi fuse for the trailer stop/turn lamps, trailer 'charge' and brakes are already installed.

I can't seem to locate the pigtail to plug a controller into.. I remember it was easy to find on my dodge and yukon. i hope when i have the controller in hand.. the plug on it will look familiar to something under his dash.. I can only find one open plug.. the size of my thumb.

ordinarily if he had more time.. I'd send him to the place just outside town where i bought my trailer(s). they slap in controllers in about 5 minutes if you already got the 6pin or 7 pin plug wireing.. etc.

No time to get him down there today as he's leaving this afternoon and needs brakes..e tc..

I'm headed to TSc to grab him a controller now...

I thoughts those Fords came with one pre-installed..... Or did that start with 05 model year? btw. I have a Prodigy from Tekonsha (sp?) and LOVE it...

Yup, its up there behind the dash. You're right, it will look like the one on the controller.

My 2003 F-150 w/tow came with a pigtail in the glove box. Have not added a controller yet.

Actually, it is an option, like $400 or so, but ties into the truck's ABS system, don't know if an aftermarket controller can do that. I thought '06 was the first year, I could be wrong though.

You will need the wiring pigatail for the particular controller you choose...the good thing is the wiring harness will be the same for most Ford SUV & Trucks for that year and should only be $20 or less additional to the controller. Once you have those items, its a simple 10 minute plug in install....NO splicing at all

Update, I hit TSC, and picked up their best controller ( 70$... hope it works ok.. cheapes one I've ever used was 99$... ).. In any case.. i lucked out and TSC also had the ford pigtail that plugs from the controller to the truck for an extr 8$.. a bargain I felt.

Once I had those in hand.. you gous were right.. about 10-15 minutes laying on my back trying to wedge my hands into a super small area to mate up those 2 plugs...

Stepfather will be hitching up the trailer shortly.. so i can tell if it is working.. but from the looks of it.. it probably will.. the controller is indicating the message for 'no trailer attached' when the brakes are pressed... which is correct by the book.. etc.

Also.. someone was kind enough to email me the pdf instructions form their supplemental insert in their ford manual showing good info about where to find the plug (thanks ).

Soundguy,
Ford's that are pre-wired with the tow package come with a pigtail that you wire to your controller. The plug is white, and should be under the dash, in the center above the tranny hump and below the ashtray. The pigtail is usually in the glove box if he still has it.

Good luck! Nothing like waiting till the last minute!:D
