Adding compressor to 220v in my garage

Its still not your fault IMO. So you told the electrician what you wanted. YOU are not an electrician. HE is. And a competent one would not install a 125v plug on a 220 circuit, regardless of what the "customer" wanted.

IF you told an electrician you wanted a 50 amp circuit with 12ga wire to run a stove, should he just do it because thats what you asked?? IT is up to the professional to advise what you can and cannot do safely

Thanks guys. You are right he was the professional.

The 220V circuit is a true 220V. I get about 208-210 at the outlet.
- I have a Longevity 164I multi purpose unit - tig, stick, plasma - needs 30 amps.
- The compressor is a Campbell Hausfeld 60 gallon single stage 3Hp, calling for 15 amps. Its a couple of years old but the same as being sold in TSC, lowes (kobalt) and Home Depot (Husky)

The legal way to run two devices from the one 50amp supply is to a sub panel. A 50 amp breaker for the welder .30 amp for the compressor.
Given that the 3HP runs at 15amp, it must have a large PF correction capacitor. 12awg wire will do. 45amp non time delay fuse, 25amp time delay fuse or a 35amp max breaker for short circuit protection. Odds are it will start and run fine on a 30amp breaker.

If this is a permanent installation I'd want a separate circuit or sub panel as described above. What a PITA to plug and unplug devices. Next you'll be wanting a Plasma Cutter and will then be plug/unplug three devices.

Not sure this is a solution,,, but how about setting the compressor near the main disconnect box and wiring it in there on it's own circuit. Then run an air system to the area near your current 220 plug?? Very cheap to do that. Eliminates the plug/unplug fiasco. Can be extended to other areas of the shop as needed.

Less noise with that thup thup thup compressor out of the shop.

And that too!!!! Mine is in the bathroom, only disturbing if you happen to be in there when it kicks on!!!

If that sudden unexpected sound doesn't get the bowels moving nothing will!

My Buddies Grandson (5 years old) came running out of the bathroom with pants around his ankles when it happened to him. The heck with modesty, he was getting outta there!!!

ROFL!!!!

Anyways, What I would do is pull the wire out of "rv" plug. Move that wire into a subpanel with 15 and 30 amp breaker in the sub panel. run new wire from subpanel 30 amp breaker back into the "rv" plug box so you can keep same setup for welder. run second wire from 15 amp subpanel into the air compressor directly unless you have plans to move AC around. in the later case install the correct plug.

This is what we've used for the welder as long as I can remember..It's probably original to the shop, built it the 50's..

Compressor noise sure IS annoying... We poked a hole in the wall and exhausted it outside, and it helped, but I wish it had it's own room..
