Adding draw hook to FEL

I'm considering looking for someone to weld a draw hook to the FEL on my SCUT. I know nothing about this, so I have some questions I'm hoping folks can help me out with...

What size hook is a good choice? I have one marked 1/2" G7... is this fine?

Where on the FEL - top, back ?

Should I have it painted (black) after welding?

What is a fair price to pay?

Anything else I should know?

What size chain do you have? I use 5/16", so the 5/16"-3/8" hooks are a good choice for me. 1/2" sounds a little big.

Where on the FEL - top, back ?

Usually they are put in line with the cylinders, you also might have to reinforce the top edge of the bucket.

Should I have it painted (black) after welding?

What color is your bucket now? Just a touch up with spray paint is fine here-it's a bucket, not a show car.

What is a fair price to pay?

Can't say here, but if you post your exact location someone here might help you for a six-pack. I would if you were near me.

Match the size to whatever chain you will typically use. I have three 3/8 hooks on my bucket. Also your welder will appreciate it if you get a flat-backed hook as they are made for welding on - see this link as a reference.

Instead of hooks why not just weld a piece of 3x3x3/8 angle to the top then cut slots in the angle 7/16" wide then you just drop the chain in the slot to the length you need. On my FEL I have 3 slots 1 6" from both ends and 1 in the middle. It can support any amount that your tractor can lift. It is easy to adjust the chain, just move it to what ever link that you need. If you want to take the chains off just roll the bucket all the way over and back up the chain will slide out. A chain wont bounce out of slot like it will with a hook. Just my 2c worth

Just make sure you weld them in-line with the loader arms. This is the strongest point of the bucket and loader. Do not weld them on the outside edges of the bucket. You will twist the bucket or possibly even the loader. We've gone to the slot style as a standard component on our new buckets and customers really seem to like the strength and ease of the self-locking style.

Here are the hooks on the LA302 bucket that's attached to my Kubota B7510HST (21 hp engine).

The dealer did a nice job including welding a stiffener on the bucket before attaching the hooks.

Got the hooks from awdirect.com.

Dealer put them on gratis when I bought the tractor new in May05.

Yea, slots are good until you try to use ratchet straps to hold a load you don't want marred up by a chain! Hooks are much more versatile.
