I have been reading on here about an additional inline filter on some tractors. I have looked on my 98 4300 w/ synrev w/ power beyond and cant see any inline filter around the rockshaft. What are my options? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Jeff

If you have the inline filter, JEFF, it looks like just a fitting (see photo).

The inline filter that comes with the factory power beyond kit looks more
substantial. It seems unnecessary to me as other tractors don't use them,
usually. JD has only one cartridge hyd filter and one suction filter for their
whole hyd system, even on HST-equipped units.

Thanks for the reply. I have been following your 4300 rebuild with great interest. Where abouts was you inline filter located?

The filter fitting screws into the back of the rockshaft valve shown in the
above photo. It's the yellow plug in this photo.

In my filter, the steel mesh screen was pushed aside. I do not plan to
replace or repair it. My rockshaft valve seems to be OK.

D...you have the old style-not the updated "inline" filter the OP is referring to. It replaces the tube shown in your picture.

Yes, that is also the filter you get with the power beyond kit, or at least
similar to it. Since Jeff's tractor is older than mine, I assume it has the
older filter like mine does.

I have looked at everything that looks like it could be a filter and then took it apart and still cant find anything.

I would have thought the 98 would have had a filter from the factory. The filter was added about then to all of JD's CUTs to solve a issue with the rockshaft drop-recover due to a leaking valve. JD did a PIP (read:recall) to add them to those 4200+ that didn't have them. I suspect the PIP has expired, but the kit may still be available. I was told that the inline has much finer screen than the older built in one. It has been moved depending on model. On the current 4x20 the filter is under the chassis.

I don't like the filter on the 4520 as it is a royal pain to service and it puts a huge amount of air into the high pressure circuit.

On a related note on the 4300 with 12/12 if the suction side screen isn't installed straight, it can get into the gears and get chewed up. When I started having issues with the hydro, I found this was the cause. I think the dealer had seen it before as they didn't say anything except, "when can we come get the tractor". They wound up opening up the transmission to get it cleaned.

Have fun. I really liked my 4300

I finally found the screen today. It was right next to the housing under the seat. The screen seemed to be in good shape with very little junk in it. So I cleaned it up with mineral spirits and compressed air and put it back together. The screens shape has kind of a bubble on the end. Would this be the older style?

A picture is worth 1000 words...

-But- the new inline filter can be seen plain as day from the rear. Dead center of the machine about 8 inches or so above the PTO shaft on the steel tube than runs from one side to the other...

It will probably a while before I get a chance to take it apart again. Were some of the screens flat?

Not sure about the screens, but you do not have to take anything apart to tell if you have the updated style.
