Adding more Diesel additives

cowboydoc, that is what the specification is for off-road. It can have as much as .5% sulfur. That doesn't mean it always does, but it can and still be sold legally as off-road. Since it costs money to remove sulfur from diesel, any on-road that has higher sulfur content than allowed (.5%sulfur>.05%) can be sold as off-road rather than scrapping it. As long as refineries and terminals (and suppliers) have the ability to store off-road separately, there is a chance you may be getting high sulfur fuel. Some people seem to prefer it.

FWIW, we're going to go through it again. The EPA is mandating that sulfur be reduced again, by 97% this time, from low sufur's 500ppm to 15ppm.

CVHoss,

I do my taxes with an online service. This year they had a form to fill out if a taxpayer had used on road fuel for off road purposes. Since I had used both gas and diesel that fit the catagory I filled out the form. It did not amount to much but what the heck! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I guess I use about 10 gallons of diesel every 6-8 weeks, maybe 80-90 gallons this year of fuel and a few gallons of gas for the brush cutter and chainsaw..... How much is that fuel tax? /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

So if you do have to buy the onroad stuff you can get the money back at tax time....

Later....
Dan

Thanks everyone for the help. Following on Bird's, and others, suggestion, I've picked up some Power Service additive from the local Wal-Mart and will be adding it to my fuel. Looks like I'll be using the on-road fuel though, as the only local suppliers of off-road say it is .5% sulfur and the J.D. manual recommends .05%. Should anything happen with the motor, don't want to get into an argument with them about warranty coverage for using the wrong fuel.

One comment on the road tax: Here in Missouri (it may be the same elsewhere), we can fill out a form for the total gallons of gas and diesel that is used off-road (tractors, boats, ATV's, dirt bikes, etc.) and we get a rebate of $.17 per gallon. We have to save all receipts and list all the vehicles using the fuel off-road, but last year I got back about $75. Now that I have a tractor, I'll be saving receipts.

It used to be that way here in Virginia but not anymore. I used to save receipts for my boat and tractor fuel. Then one year, about 1985, they said no can do.
