Adding rear hydraulics

Well, to make a long story short, I was at my "Bota" dealer last week and mentioned it to the guys at the parts counter... they informed me that I'd be looking at approximately $1,500 just in parts...

Needless to say, I said, "Thank you" and walked away... Geez Louise (sorry Louise)<

Well, Dougster... I'm going ahead with just that. Adding a 3-spool TnT with a spare unused spool. Yeah, I got the same price - from two different dealers. And that's using some parts from Surplus Center. Both dealers insist that they need to use some genuine Kubota parts. Kits are no longer available for the L2800 nor the L3400, so we get dinged for buying the parts piece by piece.

I should have it in by next week. Anxious to play with it.

I believe I paid $280.

That's what the local JD dealer quoted me. I think I'm going to contact an out-of-state dealer and get a cost+shipping quote and see if I can come in under that.

Thanks for all the replies... doesn't sound like I'd have any trouble.

To the folks who've suggested adding the SCV, is that just essentially the valve/control unit, or are there additional hoses, fittings, brackets, etc? If it's just a control head assembly, I'm sure I could probably get a 'non-Green' unit from Northern Tool for a lot less $$. But then, there's a lot to be said for getting a complete kit and not having to run down all the additional parts to complete the install.

You already have the "valve" on your tractor, the 3rd SCV kit comes with the handle, hardlines, hardware, brackets, ect. that connect to the valve. The JD kits are nice, and a good value for what you get. I think the 3rd SCV kit is also about $250 or so.

You can look at all this in www.jdparts.com yourself if you want, it's free:thumbsup:

Thanks for the welcome!

I'm eyeing the hydraulic log splitter from Northern Tool.

I bought the tractor last August when JD had zero % financing - I couldn't pass it up. Got it with a loader, the hydro transmission, and the deluxe brush guard for the grill. I've since bought a ballast box and the Northern Tool log skidder attachment (I live on 5 heavily wooded acres and have been using my 4x4 Chevy to skid logs...). Saturday I ordered a 6' flail mower. Probably next up is a hinged box blade - I need to do a lot of landscaping and contouring.

And I'm a pretty good wrench turner! I've tried searching the forums and I think I saw one post where someone stated that the kits come with instructions. So I'm basically fishing with this post to get more details. Sounds like I can handle it. Just don't want to void the warranty.

If you own a Chevy you must be a good wrench turner.:laughing::laughing:

Just kidding and welcome.

I added remotes to my tractor last fall, not a JD, but its all basically the same. Very easy to do. As for the air in the system it will bleed out. You will also have to bleed out he splitter once you get it. Just be aware, as I learned the hard and messy way, the out stroke of a splitter requires more fluid than the in stroke. This is due to the cylinder rod taking up volume. So my suggestion is add some fluid, move the splitter out 6", add more fluid, repeat. Do not add fluid for the last 8" or so then cycle back. Run the splitter though its motion 5 or so times then recheck the fluid level. This should be done with the FEL on the ground and the splitter ram retracted.

Just out of curiosity, what brand of flail mower did you buy, and where did you get it from. ??

Sweet.

I've been researching mowers and there seems to be a pretty good argument for flail mowers over rotary mowers. There's been a lot of good words relating to the Caroni mower too. I don't know when mowing season will start for you, but I won't be mowing for a few months here.

Good luck with the mower, and when you get a chance to use it, shoot me a line to let me know what you think.

Thanks! Yeah, I'm pretty excited to get it. I read many, many owner reviews and there was only one outright "hated it" review - and that came from a professional landscaper who obviously drove it hard and it "blew up" (his term) after a year. Every other reviewer gave it 4 to 5 stars. And it came in several hundred $'s less than everything else [excluding chinese which I refuse to purchase at 1/2 the price]. The Northern Tool would have been well over $3K after shipping.

My oldest brother has a JD 4-something and really urged me to go with a flail mower, but the cost kept me away and I had just figured on buying a rotary cutter. Glad I found this deal. He said he's even used his to grind down stumps! Said it makes a helluva racket, but it takes it down to the ground.
