i'm sure someone here has added a second set of brakes to their double axle trailer. How difficult is it to do.I would like to do it if it is not too involved.

It is very simple IF the mounting flanges are ON the axle. I done mine a while back and it was about 3 hours start to finish.

It's somewhat easier for electric brakes than hydraulic, but a long afternoon will have it done either way. If you are splicing into electric brakes, solder the connections, coat with liquid electric tape and use shrink wrap. That way, you won't be chasing electrical gremlins.

If your trailer has Dexter axles or probably most axle companies, they sell brake kits that you can add to the idler axle. Its pretty simple to do. As others said, be sure to seal up your wiring splices. RTV silicone work well too.

I was going to do it to my car hauler. I priced the parts where I bought the trailer. They offered to do the install for $20, so I let them. JC

Check your prices carefully, I found it cheaper to buy an entire new axle, then to buy the backing plates with brakes and the drums.

Does not make a lot of sense, but that was the way the $'s came out for me.

Be careful using RTV or silicon sealer that contains acetic acid on electrical connections. It is corrosive.

Acetic acid = vinegar. That nasty vinegar smell you smell when using silicone. I wouldn't use it on electrical stuff, instead, I use the paint on electrical tape from the auto parts store. It holds up very well to UV and stays flexible.

Thanks for the tip on RTV silicone. I didn't know that. I have used it in the past without problems. I Always learn something new here.
