Adding weight on a small 3-point disk

Just wanted to share the way I came up with to get a little extra weight on a 3-point disk. I noticed when I purchased the disk; it didn't dig in as much as the larger wheeled versions do. I added two runners on each side of it and put 1 55 gallon barrel on each side. I use a ratchet strap to hold them down. It is very easy to adjust the amount of weight on the disk. With 45 gallons per side, I figure a little over 700 pounds of weight. It now will dig into harder soil with no problems. Sure beats buying suitcase weights! I think the paint will match the first time I get it dirty. Also, I'm going to add a ball valve on the bottom of each lid. I have a few new trees I planted this spring in a remote location and figure this setup will work well to water them. Enjoy.

Looks like a good mod to me-especially for your level land but might be a bit risky in hilly areas due to potential high columns of fluid raising the center of gravity on the disc. I also like the idea of adjustable fluid/weight for various soil conditions. What model NH are you driving? Have you looked into your 3-PT lift capacity? My NH TC40 lift capacity at 24" behind is 1059 lbs. Both of those barrels filled is around 918 lbs plus the weight of the barrels, pipe racks and the disc would be over my lifting limit-just don't fill the barrels to the top or use smaller barrels!

I have a tc55. Here in IL our land is flat. Only hill I own is our pond dam. Good tip nonethe less.

The addition of the runners on each side is creative, but I would like to offer another possible solution. Rest assured, that it is not my intention to "rain on your parade", but have you considered using bags of Sakrete or cement to place on the runners. Just run your water hose over the bags until they solidify and harden. In this way, you won't have to deal with water sloshing around while taking corners, and you want have to worry about making a muddy area while dumping the contents of the barrels-that is unless your trees require that large amount of water. I have used this method for years, and this method also is great for shoring up embankments on your farm pond. Just a thought?
