I did deliberately question your choice of 2x2 angle iron.
As in "I wouldn't".

I am not qualified to even SUGGEST alternatives, we know NOTHING of your applications, no way do I want to be implicated if it all folds up due to ...any number of factors, including choice of joining material.

Your skills are a certainly a factor - "in the middle" is probably the place at which they reach their lowest point as a risk factor.

I have done many lengthen axles. Since a tube is stronger tha a box, sleeve it with a slightly larger tube inserted in the middle of the axle with the longest overlap you want, at least 6 inches, and both plug weld and circumfrence weld. Also before you cut the old axle, check for both camber and toe in on tires before cutting and after sleeving and welding and any correction can be made at this time.
to check camber (tire in or out at top) can bee done with a level and toe-in (tires in or out at front center of tire) can be done with a 2x4 and a tape measure. This will Help keep trailer tires from premature wear out.

If there is any slop in the sleeeve to axle, put gap at the top.
