Has anyone ever done this?

I wanted to add a work light to the rear fender of my 2012 X740 to shed some light behind me when working in the dark.

I went to my dealership on the weekend to order a light kit that is listed as an accessory for the X series machines, only for the dealer to tell me it will not work.

According to the parts manager, there are no extra wiring harnesses on X700 series machines to accommodate plug and play lighting. I was told I can install my own and run my own wires and switches, but I risk voiding my warranty since I would be "compromising" the electrical system. I can't remember the part number off hand, but it was listed in the accessory brochure for riding mowers and garden tractors.

What have you done in the past? I don't really see anywhere on my dash to install extra switches, there just isn't room.

The factory wireing might be well hidden, it was on my BX.. Or it could have been removed to save money.

Either way, what your trying to do isn't that hard. I love the threat regarding warranty! Gotta love it:rolleyes:

If there is no factory wiring, Id just run my own FUSED line from the battery and be done with it. I like the carling switches, they are an OEM to many manufacturers (Deere included). See my worklight thread for more info on suppliers and switches, along with LED light options. http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/customization/266049-bx-led-worklight-upgrade.html

You can get creative to install a dash switch or even install a switch directly to the light itself (like many of the tractormanufacturers do on these small machines)

I am in the process of adding hazard lights to my X7. For power I decided to use the wires that go to the outlet on the fender since I would never use that outlet anyway. Also by using the outlet wires you can use the switch that is already there and the line is already fuse protected.

Lights draw a lot of AMPS. AMPS heat wires and switches. If I was installing the lights, I would install a relay to capture and carry the heat away from the switch. A simple three prong relay would work just fine. Fused twelve volts in, one wire for a good ground and a switch in the third wire to interrupt voltage to the light.

Good point... But LED's are really low draw. Hooking them up without a relay is a no problem, the 1000Lumen lights on my BX are only 1.5A ea.

My first suggestion is to try to use some sort of click and go setup to attach. From there I would recommend LED all the way. Rigid Industries has some very nice lights. Lots of cheap knockoffs on Ebay as well.

I have a 2010 X724 and it came with work lights on the rear as well as red taillights on the fenders
