Adjusting 60\" MMM on 2230

Howdy everyone. Newbie here. Just got my first Kubota on Monday, a BX 2230 w/ 60" MMM. Couldn't wait to try it out but was really disappointed with mowing results. Lots of scalping, but I think that was a combination of the wide deck and my uneven yard mostly. Kept increasing the cut height adjustment to avoid scalping.

However, I also noticed that the deck wasn't level, so I ran thru the adjustments in the book. I HATE these Kubota manuals. Extremely difficult to follow and seem to have many mistakes in them, for instance where they say to set the anti-scalp wheels with the deck raised all the way????

Found the back to be about 3/4" higher than the front, and found the right side much higher that the left. Got everything leveled and looking good (why didn't the dealer have this done already?), but have some questions.

After I adjusted, I reviewed the book again and found some things I missed. It says the double nut adjustments on the very front are supposed to measure 1.9" from the end of the threads to the bottom of the lowermost nut. To raise the front of my deck to level it, mine are now at 2 1/2". Is this a problem?

Also, to get the proper clearance between the stop and the lower link on the right side, I realize I mistakenly adjusted the lifting link rather than the double nut in the rear. Is that a problem?

After shortening the lifting link on the right to bring the deck up closer to the stop, I had to really crank up the left lifting link.

It sits level now and has a lot more clearance when raised, but I just wanted to make sure I wasn't screwing anything up. (I haven't used it since making these adjustments last nite.)

Sorry for being so windy and thanks in advance for the help.
Great forum!

Re: Adjusting 60\" MMM on 2230

Welcome to TBN! The deck is actually supposed to be a little lower in the front -- but by 3/4", I don't know. The manual should mention this. Also, on my BX22, the deck is not level (from left to right) in the fully raised position, but when lowered, its level. You may be experienceing the same thing. Just my .02.

Re: Adjusting 60\" MMM on 2230

The specs for front to back are something like 0-5/32". I don't have them in front of me, but the specs were nowhere near 3/4".

I was measuring from the concrete garage floor to the cutting edge of the blades with the blades parallel to the tractor to check front to back, and parallel to the axle to check side to side, just like they say in the manual.

I wondered about measuring with the deck up, due to the self balancing deal, but don't know how you'd get under the left side to measure to the blades with the deck down.

Didn't think to check how level the deck looked in the down position prior to adjusting, but after I adjusted, it is perfectly level all around in the down position.

Maybe I'm just being paranoid here, but with the amount of money I just dropped on this thing, I have to make it last a LONG time, and sure don't want to screw anything up. I'm also in no way proposing to know more than the dealer who set it up/should have set it up, but running thru the checks in the manual, if sure didn't seem right.

Another thing that makes me wonder is the fact that all the tires were WAY overinflated when I checked them prior to starting on the deck. They were not only over the recommended inflation pressure, but over the max pressure on the tires.

Re: Adjusting 60\" MMM on 2230

Wow, that seems like 0 for 2 from your dealer. I think I'd evaluate a little more to see if I wanted to do more biz with them.

My dealer had my 2200 set up near perfect, as far as I can tell. I've not had to adjust anything he set up so far (owned it a year). I just used the MMM for the first time last week and it appears to be cutting excellent and level.

I think he moves enough of these that the shop guys know how and take the time to set them up right for the customers.

Best wishes,
Ron

Re: Adjusting 60\" MMM on 2230

I'm not ready to criticize the dealer quite yet, because I don't profess to know a whole lot about this tractor, yet, anyhow. Don't get me wrong, I'm no dummy to "things mechanical" by any means, just never fooled with a Kubota tractor before. Also, I would never flame anyone without calling them and talking thru it first. The dealer did tell me to call if I had any questions. Guess I really need to do that. Just wanted to bump some of this off you guys first and pick your collective brains.

I just had suspicions on the deck from the way it was hanging, and thought I'd run thru and check the adjustments, From what I could tell from TRYING to follow the manual, it wasn't within specs.

BUT, again, that might depend on whether you check it with the deck up or down, etc., and maybe the dealer had it set up right (except for the tire pressure that is, ha, ha.) I tried to follow the manual as close as I could, but like I said, the way the manual is written and illustrated leaves a lot to be desired. Are there any better manuals out there anywhere for these things???
