Advice: Inexpensive mower JD vs Cub

/ Advice: Inexpensive mower JD vs Cub #21
Often times the box store units ARE different than the dealer units. I bought a Toro mower at HD, no service, had trouble finding dealer to fix, as they didn't want to touch the HD machine. I finally found a dealer to fix it, after it was repaired I asked him what the differences were. He said the box stores spec things differently to meet price points. In the case of the mower, in the HD unit, the gears were plastic, which is what broke on mine, the deck is stamped rather than cast, there were 2 other items that I can't remember now.. also dealer version had 3 year warrenty and the HD unit only had 1 year. So something was different. If you read some of the review web pages, the Cub's bought at the box stores are junk with spindles and belts going all the time. But the ones bought at dealers work great, no issues. To me, this reinforces the idea that the box stores spec out lower quality parts.

There are no differences between the BBS Cubs models and the same models bought through a Cub dealer. All of the Cub 1000's, 1500's, and iSeries are identical regardless of where you purchase them. The reason you see so many compaints from BBS bought Cubs is that they usually aren't set up properly, or even at all. MTD has known QA/QC issues, which is why there is such a big difference in experiences from people that buy at a dealer vs a BBS.

Today I picked up a new........................drum roll please...............JD X300.

I talked myself into it. No down payment or interest for one year. So I figure it will cost about $300 year if I keep it for 10 years. It's really quiet, and comfortable. Will report again after I get mow with it a few times.
