Advice needed for Plan B

Darren hit it on the head. Get the certificate of insurance with you listed as additionally insured, there's a place or it at the bottom of the form. Read it over carefully, check the dates. Have it sent to you direct from the insurance carrier. We deal with this every week /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I went to TXDOT today to see what they require of there tree trimmers. They gave me the forms they have them fill out with there requirements.

My concern was how much insurance does the tree guy need to have. They require $500,000 in comprehensive general liability, so that's what I'll require.

They also said he'll need to have a flag man on the highway to stop traffic when the tree does fall just in case. I asked about a permit for this, but was told there isn't one. Ain't Texas great!!!

He also said that it would be nice to let them know the day I'm haveing it cut, just so they are aware of it happening. Not required or anything, but it would be appreciated.

Now I need to start getting bids.

Eddie, I recall reading quite some time ago, in The Reader's Digest if I remember right, a story a lady sent in saying that they had recently moved way out in the country and had a big tree that needed to come down, but she was afraid it might fall the wrong direction and hit the house. Now I don't remember all the exact wording in the story, but she said when a guy came to give her an estimate she asked about insurance and he told her he didn't have that kind of insurance, but that he would leave his pickup parked right where it was while he cut the tree down. She said his brand new pickup was parked between the tree and the house. He got the job. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif I guess if you tell whoever you hire that he has to park on the shoulder of the road by that tree, you'll find out how confident he is. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It was about 30 years ago I read an article in R Digest about a fella who was just starting out in the business and was blasting a stump out for a farmer. Well, he drills the stump, inserts sticks of dynamite, and sets it off. The stump rises 15-20 ft in the air and lands on the cab of the fellas pickup. The farmer turns to him and sez, "Don't worry, with a little practise you'll put it in the bed everytime." /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Eddie that is a big tree so I sure do understand your concerns. I do wonder if you couldn’t do it yourself, with some help, given your equipment though. It looks like you have a good area to drop it in and a cable on your dozer isn’t going to let it go near the highway. Your personal liability insurance would cover you if the unlikely would happen and an extra 1M blanket liability policy was less than $200 per year for me.

Of course that is easy for me to say as I sit here at my computer dirking coffee. If I were standing next to your tree $1500 might not sound like much money. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
