block and tackle would be my huess.. that and a ladder or two.. or a platform ladder.. one of thos eones that makes legs on each side then you can walk on it.. like a poor man's scaffolding, using a strip of board or plywood.. etc..

I do have one of those "adjustable" ladders, it's terribly heavy though. A Pully or block/tackle sounds like a good idea.
Here is a photo of how I did the woodstove roof work at the shop building....high on GUTS, low on BRAINS. :ashamed:
